The Complete Book of Pastry, Sweet and Savory
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (August, 1981)
Author: Bernard Clayton
Average review score:

Great for the home baker.
When I owned a small bakery in the Oregon Cascades I developed a line of savory pies in part by using information included within this book. The line of pies proved so popular I found myself becoming the vice president of Billy Bob's Pot Pies!

The one drawback for me is that the recipes in this book are scaled for the homebaker. Therefore, this book is a great resource for those readers wanting to wow their friends and extra special guests. Bernard Clayton has, most importantly, explained how any baker can produce a first rate pie crust.

I therefore advise you buy the book and get busy experimenting with the recipes - you'll never go back to mass produced pies!

The Complete Play Production Handbook
Published in Paperback by Barnes & Noble (July, 1982)
Authors: Carl Allensworth, Clayton Rawson, and Dorothy Allensworth
Average review score:

Excellant reference work on play production
Here is the equivalent of a full library on theatrical production, all between the covers of a single volume. Clearly and concisely, but with the rich understanding and enthusiasm that come from long association with the theatre, it covers every step in the mounting of a play, from the time the director selects a script to the moment the curtain goes up on opening night.

The Complete Play Production Handbook makes an ideal introduction to the world of the theatre; teachers especially, from elementary school to college, will find it helpful in staging plays of every sort. At the same time, the handbook's thorough treatment, broad coverage, and extensive appendixes (including a guide to suppliers of theatrical equipment and a glossary of technical terms) make this an invaluable reference work for almost anyone involved in any capacity-director, actor, or stagecrew member-in the hundreds of thousands of dramatic productions that are put on each year by little theatres, community theatres, and summerstock companies.

This book provides specific, detailed answers to the many questions that trouble any group seeking to bring a play to life. It tells how to read a play and understand the playwright's intentions; how the director and actors can invigorate the play through their handling of dialogue, movement, and business; and how the arts of scene design, lighting design, costuming, and makeup can be meshed to enhance the production. It also tells how to avoid the alltoo-common pitfalls of amateur productions: a play that is badly chosen, either for the performers or for the audience; a play that is misinterpreted, or not interpreted at all; a play that is so obviously miscast that the dramatic values are distorted; a play that is so badly staged that the action cannot be followed; a play that is ruined by poor scenery, lighting, or costumes, or one that fails because the different members of the theatrical team have not agreed on a common goal.

Here are the fundamentals of directing and acting lucidly explained, with line drawings and photographs of actual productions to illustrate key concepts and techniques, from the composition of the stage picture by the director to the proper handling by the actor of. crosses and turns. Here, too, is a wealth of detailed information on building and painting sets; on properties and special effects; on costumes and makeup; and on house management, promotion, and ticket sales. The proper protocol for the conduct of casting sessions and rehearsals; formulas for mixing stage paints; the making of ground plans, light plots, and prop plots; the necessary contents of a makeup kit and their application; poster design, ticket printing, and box-office procedures-these are only a few of the many topics covered. The Complete Play Production Handbook gives specific "how to" answers to all the many questions that the members of any theatrical group must solve if their audiences-and if they themselvesare to find their productions rewarding. It is essential reading for every member of the theatrical team.

Complete Posthumous Poetry
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (October, 1980)
Authors: Cesar Vallejo, Jose R. Barcia, and Clayton Eshleman
Average review score:

"Poemas Humanos" by César Vallejo

Comprehensive and readable
This is by far the best sourcebook on QDROs ever published. The author has a clear easy-to-understand and very readable style, meaning that lawyers and non-lawyers alike will benefit from the book. It is thorough and comprehensive, covering all the issues you need to address in dividing a pension plan in divorce or collecting alimony or child support from your ex's plan. Contains up-to-date cases and many very helpful discovery forms and model clauses. Consuming Environments: Television and Commercial Culture (Communications, Media and Culture Series)
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (February, 1999)
Authors: Mike Budd, Steve Craig, Clay Steinman, and Clayton M. Steinman
Average review score:

Thought-provoking and thorough
This book is rich with ideas and provides a thought-provoking analysis of television and its impact on culture. It would no doubt be interesting to anthropologists of modern culture, sociologists, and the general public. We often forget about the powerful influence of this pervasive medium, but its impact is undeniable. By making this implicit impact explicit, Consuming Environments helps us become more reflective consumers of television content.

Victorian Cottages by Andrew Clayton-Payne
This is a wonderful book for the lover of the old English cottage painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is filled with full colored pictures on every page of the paintings and describes life in these times. A great addition to anyone's library who is interested in these times and the painter's who so aptly captured a way of life long gone. Paintings by Allingham, Strachan, Stannard, Foster and others are included.

Creating Turbo C++ Games/Book and Disk
Published in Paperback by Que (March, 1994)
Authors: Clayton Walnum, Que Corporation, and Que Development Group
Average review score:

Best book for learning C++
I can't believe this book is out of print. This is *THE* best (and only) BEGINNER level book for games programming. If you're interested in breaking into the complicated field of games programming, read this book FIRST. It's not just the ONLY introduction book to game programming, its probably the best book available for becoming an accomplished C++ programmer! Appendix B alone will give you a better intro/reference to C++ than some full books on the subject. (Note: You should have SOME prior knowledge of C++ before reading the book, but the author does not assume that you are already a C++ genius.) The author presents the subject in a totally non-pretentious down to earth manner, and he actually makes you UNDERSTAND the stuff. Even if you just want to learn how to use a mouse driver, or program a really nice windows-like event driven graphic user interface, this is the book for you. It's a little outdated now that Win95 is the standard, and you won't learn how to program any cutting-edge Quake type games, but you won't find a better introduction to the subject anywhere else. TRY HARD to get ahold of this book. It was my first book on the subject, and I am now an accomplished games programmer. (Hint: If you want to break into the games programming field from scratch, start with a good ANSI C book, then get an intro book on object oriented programming (I recommend "Learn C++ in 21 days" by Jesse Liberty, or another Clayton Walnum C++ book -- he's written a few). Then read this book, followed by "The Black Art of 3D Games Programming"(--I think that was the approximate title--) by Andre LaMoth, which should be your last DOS programming book before moving onto the more complicated subject of Windows programming, for which I recommend "Programming Windows 95" by Charles Petzold. After that, you might want to check out another Clayton Walnum games programming book (I don't know the exact title of this one either...something like "Programming Windows 95 Games with Win95 SDK" ) as a good introduction to DirectX.)

Crystal Heat (Shadowsong Trilogy/Jo Clayton, 3)
Published in Paperback by DAW Books (January, 1996)
Author: Jo Clayton
Average review score:

A wonderful balance of character and plot
In some of Jo Clayton's books, the biggest shortcoming has been her tendency to design on a grand scale -- races, worlds, cultures and dialects in which you could literally get lost. The focus of the book was diminished as you were continually distracted by wondering what a particular word meant or what a particular religion was all about. In CRYSTAL HEAT, Clayton strikes a precise and enchanting balance as she presents, again, races and worlds on a grand scale, but simply presented and not at all a deterrent to an intricate plot with more twists than a roomful of Chubby Checkers.
